KANSAS SPEEDWAY 150 DRIVER LOG Oliver Gravity Separators/Denver Seminary #00 - Jun 17, 2002
The good news is we had the fastest car at Kansas Speedway this weekend as we took the lead on lap 7 and pulled away from the field. The bad new is after a great pit stop by the Oliver crew just before midway through the race under a caution, there were too many cars trying for the same spot in the race track and I was involved in an incident which turned me into the wall after passing a number of cars on a restart. We finished 15th and remain in the top 10 in the point championship.
After my qualified run I was upset because I got very lose and nearly hit the wall
so I thought my time was not very good but after me a number of car hit the wall trying to qualify.
The track got really slick. So we ended up 6th better then I thought we would be and the car was not damaged like so many others.
At the start of the race going into corner one the top three cars collected each other just in front of me, I was able to avoid them and was in third place as we went to the yellow flag. On the restart I was still third until I made a pass after one a lap for the led, I had to go below the white line on the front straight and got a little sideways but went into the lead. The Oliver car was able to pull away from the rest of the field until another yellow came out. Right before half way under another yellow we decided to pit for fuel and tires while most of the rest of the field stayed out. On the restart we were near the back of the field. I got a great start on the rest of the field and was able to get by half the cars going into corner one when there just wasn't enough race track for all the cars going for the same spot, I was turned around, almost saved it but ended up hitting the wall . We were able to go on but the rear spoiler was gone and the car was not fast anymore. I finally had to pull in and park the #00.
The Oliver crew did an awesome job this weekend, we surly did not start out with the fastest car, we just kept working on the set up and tuning the engine and by the start of the race it was obvious we had the car to beat. Thanks to the crew for their efforts in the very hot humid weather, it's strange how even though we did not finish due to the damage to the car, every one seems to be very happy!
It was good to be up front again, we are looking forward to Monroe and hope to get the car repaired in time, if not we'll pull out old reliable.
The next race is at Monroe WA June 29th.
